The Scills - In Need Of Time

THE SCILLS

Vooral de single “ It’s Your Birthday “ geeft ieders verjaardagsfeestje weer eens een andere geluid.

The Scills “ In Need of Time “.

About us

Leo Janssens, a genuine one with The Scills

LEO JANSSENS originated from a family of professional musicians, in jazz and in classical music they were active, which ment that Leo got a broad base for all music styles. Leo has been into thé music since he was a child. So he can do many genres and is a real ‘craftsman’ as they say.

You should keep an eye on LEJO aka LEO JANSSENS’ footwork during a show, this is a show in itself. Not that he’s dancing during these performances, but it is a special moment when he uses his instruments to continuously witchcraft different sounds. He simply is a perfectionist.

When one thinks of Lejo, one thinks guitar, guitar and more guitar.

You never know which guitar he will use, he just works that one concert or performence that the day brings him. It always sounds different, but always perfect. His harmonies and rithms, a regular person would get all confused by, are natural to him. Lejo knows how to add toe ach accord a single note to create more dept, tension, bluesness or Jazz. This is typical for the scills-pop of scills-sound.

This guitarwork was always noticed by other artists, resulting in Flemisch (BE) showbizz to ask him several times to help them out. PATRICK ONZIA and many others greatfully used his help.

Apart from the true guitarwork in The Scills, Leo before also pulled strings for known bands such as BILJARTEN NA HALFTIEN and, from Antwerp FILET D’ANVERS. This not only as a musician, but also as a singer and producer.

His hometown Antwerp, also asked for his talent as a writer and composer. Think of the bands FILET D’ANVERS and VANTSTAD in this respect.

!

The year is 1973, JEAN-PIERRE Daghelet brought out his first vinyl record and this in cooperation with the fameous trio at the time Lennart, Messagie & Daghelet. And so “And I love her” turned out to be a real bulls’ eye, for Benelux, France and Germany were at their feet.
With this line-up they had two more singles, “Sleeping with my dog” and ‘You can make it better’. These songs at the time were wellplugged on the national BRT-radio and TV. There were no pirate broadcasts back than, but the predecessor of VRT had somethimes a few million listeners.

EMI was THE recordlabel worldwide back than, they had a sistercompany IBC, that the band signed a first contract with in 1976. The bands name changed for this occasion to HUSH.

And yes, another bingo: their first single “Oh me oh my” was another hit. TV in Germany for Musicladen. Avro’s Toppop and our national TV broadcast helped their succes further along. Soon a few more singles and a record that sold 20.000 copies followed, and that was just in Belgium.

In 1979 the ‘teenybobber’-band succes” faded. Then Jean-Pierre Daghelet started a new band with the Hush bandmembers, BOXER, and they had a new deal with the one big record boss in the industry, JOHNNY HOES. A legendary song was recorded “Break it up”, which definetly didn’t underscore in 1980. In 1986 this song was rerecorded by a certain CARL LEWIS, the atlete with six gold medals at the Olympics that year. This was huge in the entire world! A mega hit.

After this writer-composer JEAN-PIERRE DAGHELET kept writing songs for well and lesser known artists, such as:

BARBARA DEX – 1997 – song from Windkracht 10, “Don’t run away”.
YASMINE – “Met jou wil ik meer”.
SILVY MELODIE – “Tien”.
BART HERMAN – 1993 – “Nooit”.
ANGIE DYLAN – “In the dark”.
GABRIELLO HEMEL – 2013 – “Zonder tijd”
DE ROMEO’S – 2015 – “Wat ze doet “

Marc Ségal, or how Woodie Waxx joined The Scills

Marc Ségal was fascinated by drumms since he was nine years old. Together with his brother he imitated the popular band ‘Shadows’ (70’s band) in a first band. Add to this the influences of The Beatles and UP TO DATE was born.

On the wellknown record label Ronnex “In the street” was brought out, yet under bandname WOODRUFF, a sequel to UP TO DATE that turned out to have the right ‘beatlook’.

What does one think when a record label giant such as Philips is watching you?
The years of one band after another were history and an ex-collegue and friend musician, played in Dutch rockband MAGENTA. De band was working on preperations for recording their first album, that carried the titel of this band “Magenta”. Such an offer Marc SEGAL couldn’t refuse.

It became an adventure that made Marc Ségal and the band “Celebrities-avant-la-lettre”. Many airplay and TV-shows followed. The Netherlands were interested and the celebrityride was a fact, countless performances and a regular tourcircus with a bandshow followed. Among the artists who toured with them were Zjef Van Uytsel, Urbanus, Wim De Craene, Johan Verminnen and many others. The cooperation became moreover a connection with artists such as Rob De Nijs, Robert Long and Astrid Nijgh….

To be able to meet Abba, more even, to get to know them personally, one should participate in preselections of the Eurovision Songcontest. Abba had won the year before with “Waterloo” and they were the guests during the final broadcast. The target of the band with Marc was to obtain some TV performances, and they got eight of these.

The second album “De Lifter” was recorded but no longer matched the succes of the first record, the guitarist quit and eventually singer and keyboardplayer remained. The succes story ‘Magenta’ was trough.

During that same period another trio was operating: Lennert, Messagie & DAGHELET…

Indeed, they had worked with Jean-Pierre DAGHELET a few times before.
Years later Marc SEGAL and Jean-Pierre DAGHELET met again, but this time as sessional musicians. They play together in coverbands and bluesbands and in a dancing orchestra with a lot of accompaniment work. Together they gave ‘masterclasses’ and they met Leo JANSSENS who, with Tom NASO will eventually create the Scills-pop-sound: The Scills!

Tom (Naso) Ooghe, or how an advertiser does more than just singing in commercials

Probably you’ve heard of the name Tom Ooghe aka Tom NASO, you might just not know where you’ve heard it. Often the man is asked to sing in commercials. Tom Naso thaught himself to sing. He was frequently asked as a backingvocal by several Belgian artists. Yet his voice was also praised at several studio recordings and live shows troughout Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany.

At his home, life becomes one world of music: Tom and his wife perform at numbrous marital ceremonies and receptions (together with pianist Geert De Wever). This trio ‘Eaze’ is known for their preformances of the genre soft-poppy-soul-ballads.

With ‘The Martin Brothers’ Tom Naso created a soul-motown-project. ‘Smooth’ stood for jazz-pop.

The super-live-collective Tom generated around the year 2000 that carried the name ‘Boogie WonderBand’ conquered for about 15 years Belgium and the Netherlands.
